Valerian is a hardy perennial flowering plant.  Valerian essential oil has been reported to have an antispasmodic, hypnotic, hypotensive, sedative properties. Valerian is used as a dietary supplement or herb prepared from roots of the plant. 

Background Information on Valerian Essential Oil

Valerian essential oil is used for its calming and soothing qualities. The valerian flower is a perennial plant and it is native mostly in Asia and Europe. It can be grown in other places where it can soak up the sun for at least 6 hours a day. In ancient Greece and Rome, valerian was used frequently to help aid with insomnia. It is used to sedate humans, as well as many animals. Valerian can be used for sleep problems, depression, anxiety, controlling high blood pressure, protecting the skin as well as digestive health.*

Valerian Essential Oil Blends

When valerian is combined with coconut oil, the pair make a wonderful massage oil before bed. This is a great way to use valerian and enjoy its sedative benefits. Adding a few drops of valerian and lavender essential oils to a bath is a relaxing way to prepare for a good night’s sleep.
