The use of plant oils for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing has been used since Ancient times. Plant oils for healing is mentioned over six hundred times in the Holy Bible for many purposes. The ancients did not use what we use today--technically "essential oils" which is a termed used to describe oils derived by mostly by steam distillation. This technology was only more recently invented in human history. Instead, plant infused oils were used for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. Below is a list and description of the modern counterparts.
- Frankincense: Said to have a centering effect on the emotions, Frankincense is traditionally used for meditation and spiritual growth. It is considered a holy anointing oil and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It’s also an anti-depressant, immune booster, and emotion balancer.
- Myrrh: Consistently referenced throughout the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, myrrh is a great aid for meditation. It helps to release fear of the world. It’s also excellent for skin care and nervous tension.
- Sandalwood: Antidepressant and a sedative.Sandalwood essential oil is calming and helps to balance emotions. Also great for stress, acne, and other skin issues.
- Cinnamon: Antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic, and antiviral, cinnamon is used to ease circulation and aid digestion while helping relieve stress.
- Hyssop: Mentioned in the Old Testament (as being used to purify temples), Hyssop oil was traditionally used for spiritual rites such as cleansing, purifying, and forgiveness. Hyssop helps to strengthen the lungs, supports breathing, helps digestion, aids circulation and more. It is anti-infectious.
- Cassia: Antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral, cassia is a great oil to have around the house.
- Cypress: An oil with a great amount of properties, cypress is great for menopausal issues, circulatory issues, colds, nervous tension, whopping cough, hemorrhoids, and more. It has been known to help mental clarity as well as regulate the female reproductive system.
- Cedarwood: Useful for those with ADHD or ADD, cedarwood essential oil is thought to stimulate the pineal gland that releases melatonin, making it helpful for sleep and insomnia. Cedarwood has traditionally been used for skin issues and nervous tension.
- Benzoin: Often referred to as Onycha in the Bible, benzoin is great for sleep (peaceful sleep, remembering dreams, meditation). It is great for skin conditions, sore/tight muscles, colds, asthma, and other congestion issues. Benzoin was placed in the Holy incense oil given to Moses.
