Musk is the name originally given to a substance with a strong, rich, and woody odor that was obtained from a gland of the male musk deer. The substance has been used since ancient times.
Today, Musk is a class of aromatic substances commonly used as base notes to make perfume. The gland secretions from the Musk deer are still used by some for manufacturing perfume and medicine.
However, numerous plants that also emit similar scents and artificial substances with similar odors are also used.
For those of us who love the fragrance of musk perfume, but would never dream of searching for a product made with the actual gland secretion (which is most likely difficult to find and also pricey); and who do not want to use products with synthetic substances, essential oils are the answer.
One essential oil that is commonly used because its odor is similar to true musk, is Ambrette Seed Absolute. Ambrette Seed Absolute is also known as Hibiscus oil. Sometimes the term, “Musk seed oil,” is used.
Ambrette seeds grow in pods, similar to okra seeds. The Ambrette seeds need to be ripe in order to yield high quality aromatic oils. However, the Ambrette seeds don’t yield a lot of essential oil. Thus, the essential oils are extracted mostly by hypercritical CO2 extraction.
CO2 extraction doesn’t use heat, and it’s non-toxic. This process uses less plant material than steam distillation. But the resulting oil is more expensive. That’s why vegetable musk is a luxurious essence that is highly coveted.
Use this mixture of common essential oils to replicate a similar musk scent, like that of Ambrette Seed Absolute.
