DIY Dry Shampoo With Essential Oils – Made 2 Ways

DIY Dry Shampoo With Essential Oils – Made 2 Ways

DIY Dry Shampoo With Essential Oils - Made 2 WaysIf you’ve ever been in a jam or woke up late for an appointment, you know how useful dry shampoo can be. Dry shampoo is a hair care product that involves using dry powdered ingredients (like arrowroot or corn starch) to keep your hair looking and feeling clean.

Why add essential oils to your dry shampoo? You may do without essential oils in your dry shampoo recipe. BUT if you want your hair to smell gorgeous as well as look luscious, then you MUST add essential oils!* Besides, essential oils also serve other purposes such as:

  • Soaking up excess oils on the scalp and hair leaving hair looking fresh
  • Adding moisture and shine to hair to keep it healthy and shiny
  • Fighting dandruff
  • Soothing irritated scalp
  • Easy to make with stuff you probably already have
  • And more!

The main ingredient in this DIY shampoo is arrowroot powder. Arrowroot and cornstarch are pretty interchangeable but both work because they absorb. When you rub the arrowroot powder into your scalp it helps absorb and pull the grease which leaves your hair a little bit lighter than it was before. This means you can  definitely use just arrowroot powder in a homemade dry shampoo.

Adjusting the Dry Shampoo for Hair Color

The problem with just arrowroot is that it only really works if your hair is blond. Otherwise, you’ll look a bit dusty around your roots.

To adjust the DIY dry shampoo for your hair color, add in a bit of cocoa powder. Example if your hair is light but not blond at its roots, add in a teaspoon of cocoa powder. The darker your hair, the more cocoa powder you’d want to add though one teaspoon is a great start. If your hair is reddish, add 1/2 to 1 tablespoon dry cinnamon or ginger.

DIY Dry Shampoo With Essential Oils - Made 2 WaysMaking It Into A Spray

I have always used dry shampoo in the powder form but recently discovered a recipe for a spray version. Both recipes work to grab the grease out of your hair. However, the perk to the spray is that it doesn’t make a big mess. The dry shampoo powder tends to get everywhere when you use it whereas the spray keeps it confined to your head.

For The Powder

  • ½ cup arrowroot or cornstarch powder
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder (more for darker hair)
  • 5-12 drops essential oils

For The Spray

  •  cup arrowroot or cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder (more for darker hair)
  • 2 tablespoons vodka
  • 1/2 cup distilled water
  • 5-12 drops essential oils
  • dry shampoo spray bottle

Directions for Use

  • For both recipes, combine all the ingredients in the appropriate containers (spray bottle, salt or cheese shaker).
  • Shake well.
  • To use, you can easily just sprinkle or use a make-up brush to dust the dry shampoo onto your hair or spray along the part in your hair with your fingers.
  • Use no more than 1 teaspoon powder over your whole head. For a better, mess-free option try putting the dry shampoo powder mixture in a glass salt or cheese shaker (which you can pick up for a dollar at the local dollar store) then you can just shake it on.
  • Massage into the scalp. Let sit a few minutes.
  • For the powder brush through your hair. Make sure to brush really vigorously and shake out all the excess powder. This dry blend helps lift your hair at the roots and adds volume.
  • For the spray hold a small section of hair up, pulling away from the scalp. Spray dry shampoo about eight inches away onto the roots of the hair. Work in layers and repeat until you’ve covered the oily areas. This DIY dry shampoo spray recipe dries quickly but you can speed things up if needed by blow-drying. Either way, after drying style as usual.
  • Be sure to keep the dry shampoo out of eyes.

Using Essential Oils to Dry Shampoo*

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary essential oil is one of the best natural ingredients to use when it comes to hair. It can help with dandruff, scalp issues and dryness, as well as improving overall health of your hair. It contains antioxidants that help prevent damage from environmental factors such as pollution and UV rays. Rosemary also has antibacterial properties that fight off bacteria that cause dandruff or other scalp problems.*

Rosemary essential oil can be used in a dry shampoo spray if you don’t have time to wash your hair every day or want to give your locks some extra volume before going out! Just spray it directly onto your roots then massage gently into place until all the dry shampoo is absorbed into your scalp (don’t forget about those roots!). You can also add a few drops of lavender essential if you want an added bonus in terms of helping combat irritation caused by buildup from styling products like gel or paste. These products tend to cause buildup and leave behind residue which may irritate our skin more than necessary.*

Vanilla Oleoresin

Using Vanilla oleoresin in dry shampoo is a great option if you enjoy a sweet scent. Vanilla oleoresin has its roots in vanilla beans, which have been used for centuries to create the popular flavoring for desserts and other foods. Vanilla is anything but plain when added to your beauty potions. When you add drops of vanilla to your lotion or your shampoo, you are doing a whole lot of good to your skin and hair.*

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is a great choice for dry shampoo. This oil has a calming effect that can help reduce anxiety, making it an excellent option if you struggle with stress or insomnia. It also works to deodorize and eliminate dandruff by improving circulation in the scalp while strengthening the hair follicles. This makes it perfect for anyone who has oily hair that’s prone to breaking off or falling out, as well as anyone who wants their strands to look healthier and shinier without having to use harsh shampoos on them!*

For best results, apply dry shampoo with lavender essential oil just before bedtime when you’re not planning on shampooing the following morning. Apply it just as you would in the steps above. This will greatly help to absorb the excess oil in your hair while you sleep plus help you achieve a more restful sleep (even consider adding a few drops of rosemary essential oil)! Then in the morning, only apply more as needed before styling.

Citrus Essential Oils

Lemon and sweet orange essential oils help to cleanse the scalp, remove buildup and dry skin. They are also great for skin care, so you can add a few drops of either lemon or orange essential oil to your shampoo. Peppermint essential oil will stimulate blood flow to the scalp and promote hair growth.* If you want an even more invigorating effect, try adding pink grapefruit essential oil!

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil is simply one of my favorite scents which is a nice pick me up when feeling greasy and unkempt. Geranium essential oil has been used to treat health conditions for centuries. There is scientific data indicating that it may be beneficial for a number of conditions, such as anxiety, depression, infection, and pain management. It’s thought to have antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Geranium balances the scalp’s pH by deep-cleansing the scalp, making it an excellent treatment for both dry and oily dandruff.*
