Essential oils are used to help many health issues, both mental and physical.* This article contains four recipes that contain essential oils for common emotional ailments.
Individuals use essential oils in three different ways to enter the body: 1) Applied to the skin; 2) Inhaled; 3) Ingested.
When you apply essential oils to the skin, mix them with a carrier oil, such as grapeseed or jojoba oil. Because essential oils are very concentrated, only a few drops are necessary. Mix them into a carrier oil to make a larger quantity to rub into the skin.
Also, there are only a few essential oils that are safe to be applied “neat,” meaning directly onto the skin. Therefore, a carrier oil also acts as a skin protector so that the essential oils are diluted and do not damage the skin.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and is very permeable. Essential oil molecules seep into the skin and directly enter the bloodstream to help heal.*
It’s hard to believe that smelling something can actually have a healing effect on the body. However, when you inhale essential oils, their molecules interact with the olfactory organs (nose and mouth).
When you inhale an essential oil through the nose, airborne molecules interact almost immediately with the nose, and then cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the brain.
Also, molecules are carried to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system.
Additionally, odor molecules affect the brain via the limbic system. The limbic system is the “emotional brain.” This is the reason why essential oils help mental and emotional issues, too.*
Some people ingest essential oils, usually by putting a few drops of oils into a glass of water and drinking the water.* However, it is not advised to do this without working with a professional who understands essential oils. This is to ensure that you are being guided safely.
Some essential oils are so extremely concentrated and powerful, they burn the esophagus. Certain essential oils are also toxic to the liver and kidneys when you ingest them. Additionally, chemical breakdown of certain oils during gastric processing change their effects. Lastly, there are potential drug interactions.
Therefore, always work with a professional when considering ingesting essential oils.*
These four blends are simple to make and contain essential oils for common emotional ailments.*
Add the oils to a roller bottle, along with about 3-4 times more carrier oil than essential oils. Use your blend in the morning, during the day, and at night before going to bed. The roller bottle ensures easy application!
Alternatively, put about 20 drops of a blend (without the carrier oil) into a diffuser. The blend’s scent will permeate your environment, allowing you to inhale it.
