Background Information on Peppermint, Organic Essential Oil

Peppermint is originally of the Mediterranean, but it is also now grown in USA, Italy, Great Britain and Japan. It is an herb that grows up to 3 feet high with somewhat hairy serrated leaves and pinkish-mauve flowers in a conical shape. Peppermint has been grown and used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times in China and Japan. Evidence of its use was found in a tomb in Egypt dating back to 1000 BC. The chemical components of peppermint pure essential oil include menthol, menthone, methofuran, limonene, beta-phellandrene, 1,8-cineole, isomenthone, pulegone.

Peppermint essential oil aids in relief of headaches, nausea and vomiting, digestion, pain, promotes alertness  and helps beat fatigue.

Peppermint essential oil has therapeutic properties that make it an anesthetic, analgesic, anti-galactagogue, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, astringent, carminative, antispasmodic, cephalic, cordial, decongestant, cholagogue, emmenagogue, expectorant, hepatic, nervine, stimulant, febrifuge, stomachic, sudorific, vasoconstrictor and vermifuge.*

Due to its constituents, peppermint helps aid in respiratory disorders, such as dry coughs, asthma, bronchitis, sinus congestion, pneumonia, and tuberculosis.* Peppermint oil is also effective against a range of stomach ailments such as nausea. This oil is used to relieve pain from a toothache, aching feet, neuralgia, rheumatism, and muscular pains.*

Emotionally, peppermint essential oil helps clear and release emotions of failure, restriction, rigidity and fear of dependence. 

Many insects are repelled by the scent of peppermint oil.
