Background Information on Fir Needle Pure Essential Oil

Fir Needle pure essential oil is collected from the needles of a fir tree. The oil is exactly as it sounds.  Needles are collected from the great evergreen trees, and the oil is made by steam distillation. Fir trees can grow to be about 40-80 feet tall. The trees have no odor; it is the needles that contain the fragrant compounds. Instead of “leaves”, firs have needles.

Native Americans used all parts of fir trees. The internal bark was made into medicinal tea, the roots were eaten for relief from oral pains, and the resin was used to heal skin wounds. We now use the resin as an adhesive for microscope slides, oral issues, and hemorrhoid creams. The Christian tradition uses large firs to decorate our homes during the Christmas season.

The fir needle has many other uses as well, and various cultures have used the leaves of the tree because of medicinal properties, particularly joint inflammation, respiratory conditions, and muscle aches. Germany, Bulgaria and France are the largest producing companies of this pure essential oil, primarily because of large forest areas. Fir needle pure essential oil is primarily used externally. It has been known to speed healing of cuts and abrasions. It is also a primary ingredient in chest rubs. Native Americans also used fir needles to pad pillows and to provide peaceful sleep.
