It is created from a large evergreen tree, and the leaves and fruits are used with steam distillation in order to extract the essential oil. It has been widely used across the globe for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. The plant was given its name by the Spanish because of the dried berry that appears similar to the peppercorn. The tree is native to the West Indies, the Caribbean, as well as Mexico and Central and South America. It’s grown commercially in Honduras, Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica, and Trinidad.
