Essential Oils for Constipation

Essential Oils for Constipation

Essential oils for constipation can be very effective.* It seems like talking openly about constipation is just about as uncomfortable as experiencing constipation itself! Yet, we all have had it, and some of us experience it regularly (boy, if we were only regular!).

Constipation can interfere with our everyday activities and put a damper on participating in the simple pleasures in life, like going out to dinner, or just doing anything physically active.

Hence, constipation is a black cloud that takes away from the fun and enjoyment of life! So, when constipation strikes (yikes!), try a “constipation combination!”

Top Essential Oils for Constipation

  • Black pepper – Don’t worry, this oil won’t make you sneeze like the black peppercorn used for cooking! Black pepper oil is stimulating and helps with circulation.*
  • Rosemary – Here again, another cooking favorite, rosemary is often added to meat dishes, as it helps the body to digest meat. No wonder it also helps with constipation,Essential Oils for Constipation as it is also an oil with stimulating properties.*
  • Basil – Are we making a culinary recipe, or helping with constipation challenges in this blog? Yet again, another favorite herb used in cooking, basil comes from the mint family, which includes rosemary, mentioned above. Basil is a common digestive tonic, and has carminative properties, meaning it induces the expulsion of gas from the stomach and intestines.*
  • Lemon – Known for its ability to clean toxins from any part of the body, including the digestive system.* There are many other benefits to lemon, so ingest the diluted oil 50-50, or inhale the fresh, invigorating aroma!
  • Peppermint – Popular for use with many digestive issues, peppermint also has carminative properties, like basil. Peppermint helps diminish bowel spasms and pain, and has stimulating properties, too.*
  • Marjoram – Also has carminative properties and is a common essential oil used to aid in relieving constipation. Marjoram helps in all the digestive processes, starting from the point when food is chewed in the mouth, all the way through to stimulating the peristaltic movement of the intestines and helping the ingested food to advance through them.*
  • Ginger – Helps alleviate many digestive upsets, constipation being one.* However, ginger is very strong, and not everyone enjoys its scent. Because of its strength, it may be best to first consult someone who is familiar with using it rather than trying it on your own.
  • Fennel – Great for cooking and for many digestive issues!* An interesting fact is that fennel and anise have many of the same properties, including their sweet and spicy aromas – the scent of licorice! This is very unique and doesn’t occur often with essential oils.
  • Orange – Mmmmm…we all love the delicious scent of oranges which bring happy thoughts to mind! But did you know orange essential oil also helps relieve gas (carminative properties), as well as constipation?*
  • Rose – A laxative with a beautiful scent that actually influences the intestinal and anal muscles to help clear bowels.*
  • Sandalwood – Taken internally, sandalwood is a potent tonic that can calm the entire digestive system and alleviate many digestive challenges, including constipation.*

Create Your Own Blends of Essential Oils for Constipation

Try a blend of black pepper and fennel. Or rosemary and marjoram. Whatever combination of oils you prefer (or that is recommended to you by your aromatherapist), here’s what to do:

Add 1-2 drops of essential oil to one tablespoon of a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut or grapeseed oil. Remember, essential oils are quite strong and should not be applied directly to the skin without being diluted first in a carrier oil.

Once you create your “constipation combination” from the list of essential oils for constipation, you can apply it directly on your stomach and massage in a clockwise direction (as if a clock was sitting on your belly) – the direction in which the large intestine moves the food.

Some of the essential oils for constipation can also be ingested, such as adding a few drops of peppermint or lemon oil to a glass of drinking water.*

Other suggestions for helping to aid in the relief of constipation are to always drink LOTS of water every day and to include fresh fruits and vegetables, along with fiber, in your normal diet.
