Background Information on Red Spikenard Essential Oil

Spikenard bears a resemblance to a shrub. It has soft clusters of white or pink flowers that bloom in late summer. It also produces collections of berries that will change colors red to deep purple. The berries mature in early fall. Spikenard (red) is a full-bodied and attractive forest plant. Spikenard is native to India as well as the Himalayas of Nepal. It is most commonly found in higher altitudes.

This plant has been mentioned several times in the Bible. It has been used for centuries as a luxurious essential oil, or as an addition to ancient perfumes. It has been commonly called Nard by the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Spikenard has a similar scent to patchouli. It has rich and powerful, spicy, hearty, earthy and even musky smell. Spikenard may have a light floral smell along with the rich earth tones, but the floral scent can variety depending on the variety of Spikenard used in the essential oil. The oils are usually a reddish brown color.

Spikenard is used in aromatherapy to support rest and relaxation.
